Inside Bar Pattern Explained

An inside bar is a candlestick whose entire high-low range is contained within the prior candle's range, representing consolidation and potential breakout setup when it forms in trend context.

What Is an Inside Bar Pattern?

The prior candle is the mother bar; the inside bar's high is lower than the mother's high and its low is higher than the mother's low. Price compresses volatility—neither side won expansion. Inside bars are pause bars, not automatic reversals. In uptrends, break above mother high often continues trend; in downtrends, break below mother low continues down. Multiple consecutive inside bars tighten the coil further. Body color of inside bar matters less than range containment.

Inside bar differs from harami—harami requires body inside body; inside bar uses full high-low range rule.

How Do You Identify Tradeable Inside Bars?

Mother bar should be average or larger ATR—not tiny noise bar. Inside bar forms after directional leg into level or mid-trend pause. Mark mother high and low as breakout triggers. Cluster of two to three inside bars is common NR4/NR7 style compression. Liquidity required—illiquid inside bars whipsaw. Higher-timeframe trend defines breakout bias—trade up breaks in uptrend primarily.

Inside bar at top of range near resistance favors downside break; at support favors upside—location tilts odds.

What Confirmation Should Breakout Traders Use?

Enter on stop order above mother high for long or below mother low for short when trend supports direction. Require close beyond level, not just wick pierce, on your timeframe. Volume expansion on break bar improves follow-through. False breaks that re-enter range—two closes inside—signal failure. Some traders enter on inside bar close with tight stop beyond mother—higher whipsaw rate. Wait for retest of broken mother level that holds for add.

Opening range inside day on dailies is variant—break of prior day high or low is classic intraday trigger.

Where Do Stops and Targets Go?

Long: stop below mother low or inside bar low if tighter and rules allow. Short: stop above mother high. Target mother bar height projected from breakout point—measured move of range. Multiple inside bars: use entire compression range height. Trail after partial at one projection. Inside bars offer defined risk when mother range reasonable—skip wide mother after news.

ATR filter: mother range under one ATR suits day trades; swing trades may accept wider mothers with size cut.

When Do Inside Bars Fail?

Chop produces endless inside bars without break. Break against higher-timeframe trend fails more. Low volume false breaks both directions same session. Mother bar too small—pattern insignificant. Counter-trend break fades in strong trends. Misidentifying partial overlap as inside when high or low exceeds mother. Inside bars are compression—profit from breakout discipline, not predicting direction from inside bar color alone.

Journal false breaks versus trend-aligned breaks to tune whether you require close or intraday trigger.
